The icons for any given app both actually start the app, but wherever the bad one points, things like 'recent files' is different than the good icon. That was one of the clues from the original bad install, no file location pointer. The other app icon does not have that line item. The only way to tell them apart is one has 'open the file location' in the pull down list when you right click on the icon. Unfortunately, I now have duplicate icons in the Start menu for the Office apps.

The new install seemed to correct all the folder construction problems and things seemed to be ok. Re-install seemed to complete with no problems. I then used the Support Reinstall Office utility, made sure to decrement the count of Office installs against the subscription, and the I ended up following the Support guidance and rand the uninstall Office utility. I confirmed the subscription was ok, and the apps showed up as part of the subscription.
I discovered that the Office 365 install was generally a disaster from a folder Install had problems that didn't show up until I tried third party apps that needed to locate Outlook.exe and failed. Original problem: Office purchase and install on Dec 29.

The icons are not stubs, and actually start the target app with slight differences [Recent FilesĮnvironment: Dell laptop, 5566, 16GB, Windows 10 Pro, ver 1709, all updates, Office 365 Home subscription, single install from the subscription.
I have tried getting through to Support, but keep getting told to try again later, multiple times. I have duplicate Office 365 Home app icons on my Start menu.
